On Friday, October 4, the Supreme Court appointed a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the Tirupati Laddu case. This new investigation will be led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The investigation is important because it concerns the faith of millions of devotees.

The Supreme Court has included the CBI, state police, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in the SIT and instructed that the investigation be thorough. The Court emphasized that FSSAI, as a food testing expert, would play a key role, highlighting the need for scientific expertise.

The new SIT will consist of two officers from the CBI, two from the Andhra Pradesh State Police, and a senior official from FSSAI.

In an earlier hearing, the Supreme Court questioned Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for making public statements about the alleged use of poor-quality ghee in the Tirupati laddus under the previous YSR Congress Party government. The Court pointed out that there was no solid evidence to support these claims and asked if the Chief Minister had any actual proof for making such statements.

The Supreme Court also clarified that forming the new SIT is not meant as criticism of the current state investigation team. The Court explained that the new team was created to address the concerns of the millions of people who have faith in the deity.

Several well-known people, including former MP Subramanian Swamy, YSR Congress Party leader and former Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam chairperson YV Subba Reddy, historian Vikram Sampath, Vedic speaker Dushyanth Sridhar, and Sudarshan News anchor Suresh Chavhanke, filed petitions calling for a thorough investigation into the case.

The case involves serious allegations that animal fat, specifically in the form of adulterated ghee, was used in making the famous Tirupati laddus, which are offered as prasad at the Lord Venkateswara temple in Andhra Pradesh.
